MA-PMT tests at Tsukuba (Production tubes, H8711A-10MOD)
Tapered base, isolation resistors, longer and solid pins for TSW.
Batch 1 - 2
- 3 - 4
First batch consists of 30 tubes.
Test setup is identical to that for the
pre-prod tubes.
30 tubes tested.
Four (out of 30) were sent to ANL on Oct 16, 2003 : SA0522, SA0457,
SA0487, SA0445.
The remaining tubes (except two) were sent to ANL on May 21, 2004,
after the tests described here.
- Summary table of anode sensitivity
: rms of 30 x 16 = 480 channels = 16.7%.
Was 13.8% for pre-prod,
10% for 10 R&D tubes.

Absolute gain measurements, SA0416 and SA0465
Width method :
SA0416
- SA0465
SPP method :
SA0416
- SA0465
Hamamatsu values are : SA0416 = 1.40 x 10**6, SA0465 = 1.32 x 10**6.
Tsukuba values are : SA0416 = (1.97 +/- 0.1) x 10**6,
SA0465 = (1.87 +/- 0.1) x 10**6.
- These are average of 16 channels,
combined SSP and width methods.
Tsukuba / Hamamatsu ratios are : 1.41, 1.42
The ratio of about 1.4 can be understood,
because the definition of the gains are different.
- Hamamatsu measures the cathode and anode currents.
Their ratio anode/cathode
is the gain.
- Here, the cathode current corresponds to all the electrons
that left the cathode, not necessarily arriving at the (first) dynode.
- On the other hand, the SPP method measures the
multiplication factor for the single photons
- that have arrived
at the donode (those did not arrive ended up in the pedestal peak).
- The fraction that actually arrives at the dynode
is called the collection efficiency.
- Therefore, in the Hamamatsu gain defined by anode/cathode,
the denominator is larger than the one for SSP, and thus a
lower gain.
- The collection efficiency is
a function of the voltage between the
cathode and the first dynode, and is
typically 0.7,
-
which is in agreement with the observation, 1/1.4.
Second batch, 92 tubes.
92 tubes tested.
All tubes at Tsukuba as of June 9, 2004.
-
Summary table of anode sensitivity
: rms of 92 x 16 = 1472 channels = 12.1%.
Was 16.7% for first batch,
13.8% for pre-prod,
10% for 10 R&D tubes.
